You can delete your BookZeta account yourself from your profile. This article explains exactly what happens when you do, because the answer is more nuanced than "everything disappears."
How to delete
Open your profile, find the account deletion option in your account settings, and confirm. There is no waiting period and no approval step.
What happens immediately
- Your personal details are anonymized. Your name, email address and profile information are scrubbed from the account record.
- You are signed out everywhere and can no longer sign in normally.
- Your linked social accounts are disconnected.
- Your account is soft-deleted, not erased, so it can be restored later if you change your mind.
What stays
Stories you published to the public library, and reviews you left on other people's stories, remain. They are detached from your identifying details, but the content itself stays up.
This is deliberate. Other readers have those stories in their reading lists and reading history, series depend on their earlier books existing, and reviews are part of a story's public record for the creator who wrote it. Deleting them all would break other people's libraries.
If you want specific stories removed, delete them before you delete your account. Once the account is gone, self-service removal is gone with it. You can still contact support afterwards, but doing it yourself first is much simpler.
Changing your mind
Deletion is reversible, and your stories come back with the account.
- Use the restore link. When you delete, a confirmation email goes to your original address with a magic link that restores the account in one click. Keep that email.
- Or just try to register again. If you sign up later with the same email address, BookZeta recognizes it and emails you a fresh restore link instead of creating a blank new account.
Two things to expect after restoring:
- Social sign-in is unlinked by deletion. If you used Google, Apple or Facebook, reconnect it after you restore, or sign in with your email address and password.
- Your email address is scrubbed on deletion, so signing in with the old address will not work until the account is restored through one of the two routes above.
Subscriptions are separate
Deleting your account does not cancel a subscription. Cancel it first, then delete.
- Subscribed on the website? Cancel from your profile before deleting.
- Subscribed in the iOS or Android app? Cancel it in your Apple or Google account settings, since app-store subscriptions can only be cancelled through the store. See Using BookZeta on iPhone and Android.
Unused Creation Points, monthly or bonus, are not refunded. They stay with the account, so if you restore it later they come back with it.
Export your work first
Once the account is gone you cannot get your files back from it. Before deleting, export anything you want to keep: EPUB, print-ready PDF, DOCX, Markdown, audiobook files, cover images. They are yours and the exports have no restrictions on them. See Export formats explained.
Downloaded exports keep working after deletion. They are files on your computer.
If you just want a break
Deleting is not the only option:
- Turn off emails. Notification settings in your profile control promotional, system and newsletter email separately, with a do-not-contact switch that covers everything.
- Cancel the subscription and keep the account. You keep your projects and can still read the library.
- Unpublish specific stories rather than removing the account.
