Synopsis

At Mesa Flats High, a flat-roofed public school baking in a dry valley of strip malls and tumbleweeds, sophomore Toby Alvarez has torched his grades, his sleep, and his lunch period for one theory: Principal Grimsley is a genuine ancient vampire lord. Not metaphorically strict. Fully fanged, cape-wearing, bat-commanding, student-hypnotizing, and somehow also in charge of hall passes and budget meetings.

Grimsley is seven feet tall, never seen before ten, sweats through May in a high-collared black coat, sips something red from a travel mug, calls students my fledglings, flashes teeth way too sharp for pep rallies, and once hissed at a cafeteria garlic knot and left. Toby's crew is zero help. Priya Deshmukh, debate champ, will not believe it without a spreadsheet. Jenna Park, comedy account queen with forty thousand followers, only cares if it films well. Benny Ruiz, professional first-period napper, just agrees with whoever spoke last.

Toby goes full chosen-one parody, waving the dusty 1987 student handbook as a book of dark rites. No hats means no holy symbols. No outside food means control the food supply. No leaving campus means keep the herd close. Priya says it means no litter. Toby calls that accomplice talk. Library stakeouts become fry debates and a log reading Day Four. Still pale. Day Five. Still tall. Grimsley never eats in public, skips photos, and promised a senior detention for eternity. Jenna adds dramatic music. Benny wakes screaming he is ready to fight, then naps again.

Detention in Room 114 under buzzing lights turns dark-funny. Toby lands there for KNOW THE SIGNS posters and meets lifers sure Grimsley feeds on late homework. Prank war erupts. Garlic bread on his chair earns Needs salt. Jenna swaps announcements for bat squeaks. Benny wears garlic-knot armor. Priya forces a noon Saturday car wash in brutal heat. Grimsley shows up in a giant hat and sunscreen, miserable. Toby yells proof. Priya yells everyone hates sun at one hundred and four degrees. The Fall Dance theme A Night in the Castle breaks him. The hunters crash with rulers, punch-filled water guns, and a mirror. Grimsley arrives looking like prom Dracula amid dry ice. The mirror shows a tired guy with a crooked tie.

Trailing Grimsley after the dance flips the joke. He drives his elderly mother to dialysis before school, crashes in his office after losing power at home, drinks tomato juice for ulcers, wears the coat because the building runs freezing, says fledglings after twenty years as a drama teacher, avoids garlic from an allergy, and looks pale from writing grants to save art class. Grimsley skips punishment with a deal: quit posters, join the paper, hunt low attendance, moldy textbooks, and the dead heater in Room 114. Toby's takedown becomes a hit, fact-checked by Priya, memed by Jenna, with Benny quoted as zzz. They apologize, clean the gym, haul donated jackets, then watch his coat flap like wings at dusk. Benny swears floating. Jenna swears fangs. Priya blames lighting. Toby grins, says fine, just a guy, then asks why he never ages in yearbooks. They run back screaming.
