Synopsis

In the golden age of ancient Egypt, a young girl named Nefertari lives in a small mud-brick village along the banks of the life-giving Nile River. She is the daughter of a master boat builder, a man highly respected for crafting vessels that carry grain, stone, and sacred offerings. Nefertari spends her days watching her father work, learning how to shape planks of acacia wood. She holds a grand dream: to build a boat majestic enough to sail across the sky, carrying the sun itself. Her wise grandmother fuels this imagination with stories of the sun god’s daily journey, explaining that the sun sails a fiery ship across the heavens by day and navigates the underworld by night. Her grandmother teaches her that the sun’s journey represents life itself, and every vessel needs a brave captain.

One spring, disaster strikes the land. The Nile fails to rise, leaving the crops to wither and the earth to crack under the dry heat. The villagers grow anxious, and the priests offer prayers, yet the waters remain low. Nefertari’s father suggests that the sun boat has lost its way in the sky. To guide it back, the village elders decide to build a small, sacred model of a sun boat to send down the river as a tribute. However, with the adults consumed by desperate daily chores and repairing working vessels, no one has the time to build this delicate craft. Sensing her community's deep worry, Nefertari steps forward and volunteers to build the boat herself. Though her father is hesitant, he recognizes her determination and grants her permission to try.

Working diligently under the blazing sun, Nefertari uses scraps of wood, resin, and fine linen thread. Her fingers become sore and calloused, but she refuses to give up. She carefully carves a crescent-shaped hull, fits a sturdy mast, and paints the protective Eye of Horus on the bow. When finished, the miniature sun boat is a masterpiece of craftsmanship and devotion. The entire village gathers at the riverbank to watch the launch. As the tiny vessel catches the current and sails away, Nefertari feels a mix of sadness and pride, having sent a piece of her heart down the river. Her grandmother comforts her, noting that the great sun boat now has a tiny companion on its journey.

The very next morning, a miracle occurs. The Nile begins to rise, returning vital water to the parched fields. The village erupts in celebration, and Nefertari’s father holds her close, praising her for building a vessel that carried hope. The story of her little boat spreads far and wide, recorded by scribes and shared by priests. Nefertari grows up to become a legendary boat builder, designing ships that carry both goods and dreams, always guided by the memory of her very first creation that helped save her home.
