Silence Between Worlds

Synopsis

Dr. Mara Kovac, an experimental physicist whose theories on topological transitions were once dismissed, finds her work suddenly vital when unnatural rifts open across the world, heralding an alien invasion. These rifts not only bring alien entities but also alter the fundamental rules of space and causality. Forced into action, Mara collaborates with Jonas Reeve, an emergency coordinator with a military background, whose procedural approach contrasts sharply with her improvisational tactics. Their partnership, fraught with tension, drives the narrative as they navigate the chaos.

The invaders, a collection of shifting perspectives, construct thought corridors and reassign objects and people to alternate dimensions with clinical precision. The invasions are unpredictable and surgical: a child vanishes into a kitchen faucet, reemerging days later with a new grammar; a government building folds into a new, unmappable geometry. The focus remains on human responses to these events, capturing the essence of improvisation and negotiation in the face of the unknown.

The core of the narrative revolves around human cost and choice. Mara's research allows her to predict the propagation of rifts, focusing on their preference for disrupting key societal functions. This knowledge places a heavy burden on Mara and Jonas, who must decide whether to save a few lives immediately or sacrifice them to create a broader preventive map. The ethics of triage in such a shifting reality are explored without easy answers.

Interdimensional travel is portrayed as a weaponized reality, altering those who pass through it in subtle, often dangerous ways. Some become guides, navigating transient corridors, while others succumb to cognitive dissonance. The societal impact is treated clinically, showing adaptations like public mourning rituals, black markets for dimensional coordinates, and a divided scientific community debating the ethics of weaponizing or sealing the rifts.

The narrative style is terse and focused, with action scenes and exposition integrated into dialogues and planning sessions. Descriptions are minimal, emphasizing effects over aesthetics, which heightens the tension and fits the compact 70-page format. Each paragraph advances the plot or deepens character motivations.

The novella also examines power and responsibility, as local officials and corporations seek to exploit the rifts for political and financial gain. Mara and Jonas must contend with this human opportunism, making moral decisions that challenge the reader. Key moments include negotiations over data access, covert missions against corporate labs, and critical choices between immediate rescues and long-term strategies.

Romantic relationships are portrayed pragmatically, shaped by shared trauma and divided loyalties, with moments of tenderness that are functional and measured. The ending is deliberately ambiguous, with a risky scientific intervention mitigating the immediate crisis but leaving some rifts open. The characters are left to rebuild in a world where the threat of other dimensions remains.

This novella offers a concentrated exploration of ethical dilemmas and operational challenges in responding to an alien invasion that disrupts reality itself. It focuses on how ordinary people adapt and make critical decisions when faced with extraordinary circumstances, questioning whether knowledge serves as a weapon or a lifeline in a world where the seams between dimensions are exposed.
